IMPEACH GEORGE W. BUSH

We went to war because we were attacked.
-George W. Bush, June 28 speech

Fact: We were attacked by followers of an extremist group called Al Qaeda, whose leader, for religious and other reasons, was an enemy of Saddam Hussein. No serious evidence has ever surfaced that connected 9/11 with the Iraqi government. To say we went to war with Iraq because of 9/11 is a lie.

Number of Americans dead because of attacks by Iraq prior to the invasion: 0

Number of Americans dead after being placed in harm's way during the invasion and occupation: 1,700 and counting.

Impeach George W. Bush.

If only it were so easy. Apparently logic and common sense have vanished from politics in the good ol US of A. At least morons like W have a limited shelf life in the highest office.

I'm still not quite sure why it's better to kill Americans abroad than at home; it does have the effect of distancing ordinary Americans from the immediate consequences of the war it started. There's no way to know either if the fact that there hasn't been a "second" 9/11 is because of bringing our soldiers to be sitting ducks for Al Queda abroad, or in spite of it.

How many terrorists have we created since 9/11?

We don't do body counts anymore but I think it's safe to say that the number of terrorists we have killed is greater than the number of military men and women we have lost. We have a very skilled military. They are good at what they do.

Yes, Iraq has become a magnet for terrorists...that is convenient because we have 130,000 troops stationed there. Would the terrorists be there if we weren't? Probably not...but then where would they be? Taking flight lessons in Ft. Lauderdale?

I believe most of our soldiers fully understand the mission, which is to draw them in over there and get rid of them so we don't have to deal with them here. Everything else is secondary. It's just not politically correct to be so blunt in explaining our motives.

9/11 happened BEFORE we went to Iraq. Terrorists were already being "created". It only took 19 to kill 3000 people. I take issue with the idea that we are creating them anyway. I think they're pretty much homegrown.

Ok, I've practically taken over your blog here...sorry about that!

Saije,

We didn't go to war to make Iraq a "terrorist magnet". We went to war with Iraq because the Bush administration claimed Iraq was an immediate, grave threat to our safety, because it had enormous amounts of "weapons of mass destruction" (these, it was strongly implied, included the realistic possibility of having and using nuclear weapons against the United States).

When I say "create" terrorist, I mean this: imagine that you are a child living in Iraq. Your family is reasonably apolitical and middle-class. One day, out of the blue, the U.S. drops bombs on your neighborhood. It might have been a mistake (as has happened numberless times), because the bomb was supposed to go elsewhere, or was dropped on your neighborhood based on bad intelligence, or it was not a mistake, because some guy who's taken up arms against the Americans was hiding five doors down. Now half the neighborhood is dead, many of them children, your friends, and most of your family. When you grow up in the new "democratic" Iraq, what are you more likely to become: 1) a flag-waving supporter of the good old U.S. of A., or 2) someone who harbors near-maniacal resentment against the country that killed his friends and family for no good reason? The kind of kid I'm describing is being "created" regularly in Iraq, and that's why George Bush is the best thing that ever happened to Osama Bin Laden.

To my knowledge, none of the 19 hijackers had ever lost anyone to an American bomb. From all reports, they were generally well educated and from middle class families. Admittedly there are Iraqi nationalists fighting for Iraq. They have, according to latest reports, turned on the foreign fighters and have started fighting them instead of us as they do not like the suicide bombings, the demands that the women wear burkas, that men grow beards, etc. One Iraqi man who had been fighting US troops was reported as saying that they want these jihadis gone because they want to dictate how Iraqis should live. It seems most normal Muslims who are exposed to these nuts tire of them pretty fast. Just another benefit.

I'm curious: Why do you think that groups like Al Qaeda are so angry at the U.S.? Why do you think 19 well-educated (as you put it; I don't know their level of education) guys would commit suicide just to slaughter lots of innocent Americans? George Bush claimed they were "evil" (in George Bush-parlance, I take this to mean "evil" in an almost supernatural sense--like Satanic-evil) and that they "hate freedom"? Do you buy that?

Here is an article about the 9/11 hijackers:

I don't think they just hate the U.S. I think they hate the "West", i.e., modern civilization. They have a dream of a return to the glory days of Islam, say 12th century I think? Maybe earlier.

But I'm not really qualified to explain what makes a 26 year old man --who comes from a decent family that worked hard to provide him with a college education and a chance for a better life, who visited, lived and traveled throughout Europe, the US and other parts of the world-- decide that getting a job and having a family, making something of himself and contributing to his society are less worthy choices than hijacking a plane and flying it into a building filled with people he's never met-- it is completely foreign to my values. But then I think that might be the point.

Clearly those 19 men, and others of their kind, believed in something other than what you and I (and thankfully most of the rest of the world, including most Muslims) believe in.

Hey, excellent website. A great Iraq resource is Deaths in Iraq. It breaks all of the casualties down by age, race, branch of the military, country, etc.
